Arma 3 Weapons

Arma 3 has 27 primary weapons, 5 secondary weapons, 4 launchers and 2 static weapons. Almost all weapons in Arma 3 are fictional, but are based of real weapons or prototypes. Weapons in Arma 3 are split in the following categories:

  • Handguns
  • Submachine guns
  • Assault rifles
  • Battle rifles
  • Sniper rifles
  • Squad automatic weapons
  • Launchers
  • Static weapons

Some weapons also have camouflaged version. These versions are exactly the same as the normal version, but have a different skin to blend in with the environment so the user is harder to spot. Most weapons can also have attachments like sights (in Arma 3 you can choose from a wide variety of sights with different magnifiers and rectangles), flashlights and laser pointers.

Handguns

Handguns are guns that can be held in one hand (in Arma 3 they are used using two hands) that fire smaller calibers (9mm and .45 ACP). The category handguns is sometimes also referred to as pistols or revolvers, but these words are better to be avoided if you're talking about the secondaries in Arma 3 since there is a big difference in the way pistols and revolvers operate. Handguns are effective in close range combat or close quarters combat. Situations a handgun could be used in is for example while breaching a building or when your primary weapon is out of ammo. Pistols use magazines, which can hold a lot a bullets and allow for fast reloading of the weapon, while the revolver uses a 6 round cylinder. Handguns in Arma 3 are:

Submachineguns

Submachineguns, also known as machinepistols, are small automatic carbines that fire pistol calibers (9mm and .45 ACP). All submachineguns in ArmA 3 have 30 round magazines and can all fire fully automatic, bursts and semi-automatic. This makes the submachinegun a very controllable weapon with low recoil (per shot) and three fire options. Another helpful feature of the submachinegun is it's high fire rate and it's high capacity magazines. Submachineguns are effective in close range or combat quarters combat. They are good for breaching and clearing buildings, but don't turn as fast as handguns because the submachinegun is longer. Submachineguns can sometimes be used in medium range combat, but never in long range engagements. Submachineguns in Arma 3 are:

Assault rifles

Assault rifles are selective fire rifles that fires a intermediate cartridge(6.5×39 mm and 5.56×45 mm) and have detachable magazines. In Arma 3 all Assault rifles have 30 round magazines and all of them can be fired fully automatic or semi automatic. There are 2 main assault rifle series in Arma 3, those are the MX series and the Katiba series. Assault rifles are effective in medium range and long range combat. Although there is a difference between the 6.5 and the 5.56 caliber, both calibers do fine up to 300 meters. The assault rifle is a standard service rifles, this means that mostly every member of the 29th is allowed to use these weapons. Most assault rifles also have a carbine version and some also have a variant with an under-barrel grenade launcher. Assault rifles in Arma 3 are:

Battle Rifles

Designated marksmen rifles (or DMR) are rifles with high calibers(6.5x39mm, 7.62x51mm, 7.62x54mm, .338 Lapua Magnum, 9.3x64mm and 12.7x54mm) used between ranges from 250 meters to 800 meters by designated marksmen. Designated marksmen rifles mostly fire semi-automatic since they're most effective this way, but some also have an automatic option. The calibers are way more powerful than assault rifles (except for the MXM, wich is a variant of the MX Series and uses the same cartridge) and can be used for longer ranges. Designated marksmen rifles are effective in medium and long range combat (up to 800 meters average). Designated marksmen rifles are best to be used with long range scopes. If the designated marksman decides to use a scope it might also be a good idea to carry a good secondary for close range engagements. Designated marksmen rifles are:

Sniper rifles

Sniper rifles are rifles with very big calibers (12.7×108 mm and .408 CheyTac) used for very long ranges used by snipers. Arma 3 has only 2 snipers, a bolt-action rifle and a semi automatic rifle. Bolt-action means that the user has to manually operate the bolt, in Arma 3 this happens automatically. The calibers used by sniper rifles have great penetration power, especially the 12.7x108mm AP (Armour Piercing). Sniper Rifles are most effective on long ranges to take out special targets. Sniper rifles can also be used in medium ranges, but the sniper has to keep in mind that he should be able get away without being seen after taking the shot. Sniper rifles should not be used in fire fights, since it takes time to aim the rifle precisely and the very powerful scopes make aiming on close ranges very hard. The fire rate is also slow, magazines are not carrying many rounds and reloading takes time. The sniper rifle is a powerful weapon, but only when used by well trained experienced snipers. Sniper rifles in Arma 3 are:

NOTE: *only available if you own the Marksmen DLC.

Squad automatic weapons

Squad automatic weapons is the term used for automatic weapons with very high capacity magazines with rifle calibers (6.5x39 mm, 7.62×51 mm, 9.6×64 mm, .338 Norma Magnum) that support the squad with suppressing fire. Most squad automatic weapons are light machine guns (LMGs) but the MX SW (MX series variant) is an automatic rifle, that's why the category is called squad automatic weapons. Squad automatic weapons are effective on most ranges since their main goal is to suppress the target. While suppressing you don't have to be very accurate, because of this you can use it on most ranges to suppress. If you want to fire accurately you should avoid longer ranges. While using a squad automatic weapon it is also a good idea to have a good secondary, since squad automatic weapons are not very good in close quarter combat. Squad automatic weapons in Arma 3 are:

NOTE: *only available if you own the Marksmen DLC.

Launchers

Launchers are special weapons meant to take out armored targets and sometimes also personal, launchers are used by AT soldiers and use a variety of rocket-propelled projectiles (Anti Air, Anti Tank and High Explosive). The Titan launchers can be locked on to a target so that the projectile can adapt it's movement to the targets movement to make sure the projectile hits the target. If not locked on to a target the projectile can be controlled by pointing with your launcher in the direction the projectile has to go. The PCML and the RPG 42 are unguided projectiles and can't be controlled before or while flight. Launchers are best to be used to take out armored vehicles, but can sometimes also be used against enemy personal. Keep in mind to use HE(high explosive) rounds when firing at enemy personal. Launchers in Arma 3 are:

Static weapons

Static weapons are the most devastating weapons normal infantry can carry, but you need two soldiers to set one up. You'll need to carry the tripod (normal or raised) and the actual gun (normal or raised). There are 3 static weapons in the game: .50 BMG machine gun(MK30), 25 mm grenade launcher(MK32) and a 82 mm mortar(MK6). All tripads/bipods have to be carried in one bag by a soldier and the weapon has to be carried in a second bag. Although these weapons are very deadly and have ranges up to 2000 meters and can also engage enemy armored vehicles, they require two soldiers to carry them and set them up. These two soldiers are dedicated to using this weapon and can hardly carry anything else than the most necessary equipment. Static weapons in Arma 3 are:
